Support relief efforts in Haiti

Raisely is mission-driven, seeking to improve the wellbeing of people and our planet in all we do. After the devastating earthquakes in Haiti, we wanted to highlight organisations out there making a difference. Find out how you can donate to Haiti and support relief efforts.

On 14 August 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti.

So far at least 2,200 have been reported dead, with many more still unaccounted for.

This earthquake was a similar magnitude to the devastating 2010 earthquake which killed more than 200,000 people, and which Haiti was still struggling to recover from.

In the aftermath, the situation on the ground is becoming a complex crisis.

The people of Haiti are in desperate need.

As one of the poorest nations in the Americas, and without a reliable or financially resourced government, aid is extremely important. The people of Haiti rely on aid for basic services – including healthcare, education and basic sanitation.

So, to help Haiti through this crisis, we’re shedding light on the issues - and on the causes you can get behind.

What’s happening in Haiti right now?

Cities and towns have faced widespread destruction. Most buildings have collapsed or suffered devastating damage. In Les Cayes, near the epicentre, around 1 in 6 houses crumbled to the ground.

Hospitals are at breaking point, with some patients left on beds in car parks.

And as if it wasn’t enough, a storm swept through just a few days after the earthquake – flooding areas and washing away temporary tents.

The Haitian government is not in a position to help – with the country already in political turmoil.

Just a few weeks before the earthquake, President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated. The government does not have the finances to help Haiti.

There have been increases in violence and political unrest, making it even harder to get aid to people who need it.

Haiti has a long history of political unrest, corruption and lack of basic services. The first nation in the Caribbean to throw off French colonial rule, it was forced to pay reparations to former slave owners, which it only finished paying off in 1947. This crippled the economy and contributed to deep political divides in the country.

The people of Haiti rely on aid, NGOs and church organisations to fill in these gaps in services🚑

That’s why for places like Haiti, charity fundraisers, emergency aid and support are especially critical in the wake of a natural disaster.

And there is one other important thing aid does: it helps give the people of Haiti hope.

Here at Raisely, we believe in helping humanity and the power of fundraising. When searching for ways to donate to Haiti, we came across the following organisations doing incredible work with their emergency fundraising appeals.

If you are also looking for ways to help, check out these campaigns and consider making a donation today.

Active campaigns to help Haiti

Action Aid

Action Aid is a women’s rights organisation which works to achieve social justice, gender equality and the eradication of poverty. It has operations in 45 countries, including Australia (the arm running this campaign).

Funds will go towards getting ActionAid’s Haiti network of trained (women) first responders. This includes specialised support for women and girls at risk of gender-based violence. Research by Action Aid shows gender-based violence has been rising this year, and spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is expected to get even worse.

Partners In Health, Canada

Partners in Health (Canada) is an organisation which started as a one-room clinic in rural Haiti. They now have millions of patients across four continents, focusing on providing medical care to the world’s most impoverished communities.

Their Haiti appeal will use funds to provide urgent medical care for affected communities. They will do this alongside partners in health and their sister organisation Zanmi Lasante to ensure medical assistance gets to where it needs to.

With hospitals completely overcrowded and at breaking point, and with at least 9,000 injured, it is organisations like PIH who provide urgent care. 🏥
